How does MotionAware work?

Your smart lights are always communicating with each other through Zigbee. When someone moves between the lights, these Zigbee signals are disturbed. MotionAware measures these disturbances in the signals and determines whether someone has entered the room.

Can I use MotionAware with other sensors?

Yes! MotionAware was designed to work with Hue cameras and motion sensors. You can create Device groups in the Hue app to let all your devices work together.

What do I need to use MotionAware?

You’ll need a Bridge Pro and at least three compatible lights. More than 95% of Hue lights are compatible with MotionAware. Though the app will only show compatible lights during setup, you can check the list of non-compatible lights here.

The lights you use should be in the same room and located within 1 m/3 ft and 7 m/23 ft of each other, covering the area where you expect the most motion.

Is MotionAware free?

Yes! You can set up and customize Motion areas that trigger your lights free of charge — all you need is a Bridge v3 and at least three MotionAware-compatible Hue lights.

However, if you want to use Motion areas with your Philips Hue security system (e.g., sending alerts when it detects motion), you'll need a Secure plan.

Which Hue products support MotionAware?

More than 95% of all Hue products we've ever sold are compatible with MotionAware. Those that don’t are incompatible for different reasons. For example, portable lights such as the Go portable table lamp and accent light are intended to be moved around — this would constantly change the Motion area, which would affect performance.

Hue switches and motion sensors are battery-powered, and the battery life could be affected by the continuous sensing that MotionAware requires. Smart plugs may be connected to a variety of light with different loads, and first-generation products such as A19 and BR30 bulbs or Lightstrip Plus v1 have limited memory.
